The UFC announced a banger of a fight between Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway for UFC 300. To top it all off, Gaethje will defend the BMF title against Holloway. Also, this is a lightweight bout indicating Holloway’s move back to the 155lbs division. Now, ‘Blessed’ disclosed his thought process of accepting this fight and looked forward to beating Gaetje.
In a recent interview, Max Hollway said he wanted to throw out his name, considering Justin Gaethje’s decision to wait for the lightweight title shot. Here is what he said:
Justin Gaethje looked like he needed a dance partner since Oliveira and Islam was booked at the time, and just threw my name in the hat. The BMF belt is great. Being right there at ‘55, being that ‘55 weight class is right there, only 10 pounds away from ‘45, I can do both classes. Why not throw my name in the hat?Max Holloway via Kevin Iole
A win over Justin Gaethje in UFC 300 would place Max Holloway right into title contention at 155lbs. As such, ‘Blessed’ welcomed the options it opened and pressed it was the main reason for fighting Gaethje. Even a double championship status would be possible down the line. However, he explained that he remained focused on his next opponent and not looking too far ahead.
Max Holloway won his last two fights at featherweight against Arnold Allen and The Korean Zombie. However, he found himself in a weird spot since he already took on the featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski thrice and lost every time. This forced him to find other options, finally landing on the Justin Gaethje matchup.
Max Holloway Holloway gives his thoughts on Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria
Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria headlines UFC 298 in February. Being the #1 contender in the featherweight division, Max Holloway looked at the championship fight and shared his thoughts. While many people counted ‘The Great’ out due to his poor performance last time, Holloway persisted to differ. He believed in Volkanovski’s abilities and backed him to win.
However, he acknowledged the importance of Volkanovski entering the cage healthy and uninjured. He said the only thing that could affect Volkanovski’s performance would be if he got impaired in training camp. Further, Max Holloway touched upon the oozing confidence from Ilia Topuria and welcomed it.
Also, the 145-pound title fight of Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria would determine Holloway’s chances of competing once again for the featherweight belt. Since ‘Blessed’ lost his three chances to crack Volkanovski, Topuria winning the belt would help him get a title shot soon. However, Holloway extended his options with a move up to lightweight. As such, he faces Justin Gaethje for the BMF title in UFC 300.
