Kamaru Usman-Michael Bisping

There’s no doubt that Kamaru Usman is the best fighter on the planet, but simply being called the pound-for-pound #1 isn’t enough for The Nigerian Nightmare, at least he doesn’t see it that way. Usman, the current UFC welterweight champion, is on a 19-fight winning streak with 15 of those fights having fought in the UFC. Usman is just 1 fight away from tieing with middleweight great Anderson Silva for the longest fight-winning streak in UFC history and 2 fights away from breaking Silva’s record.

Usman has wins over the likes of Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, Leon Edwards, Sean Strickland, Gilbert Burns, Tyron Woodley, Rafael Dos Anjos, Demian Maia and many more. Usman is now so going to fight #2 ranked Leon Edwards in a rematch at UFC 278 next month for his sixth title defence. After that Usman is most likely to skip middleweight to up to light heavyweight and challenge for a potential second title for his legacy there.

The reason Usman is not fighting at middleweight is simply that his fellow countryman Israel Adesanya ruling the 185 lbs division currently. Usman is therefore looking for something that has never been done before in the pursuit of a second UFC title and he has UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping’s nod. Bisping explains in one of the videos on his youtube channel why he thinks Usman will do fairly well despite making a huge weight leap.

“If Kamaru Usman gets through Leon Edwards, then he’s going to jump up 2 weight classes,” says Bisping “We’ve never seen that done before, that would truly be, history in the making and believe it or not, I think Kamaru would do very well up there. Listen, size is a very important thing, they always say a good big guy would beat a good small guy. But Kamaru’s not small, he can put some weight, he can bulk up…” continued Bisping.

What do you make of Bisping’s thoughts on Usman? Do you agree with him? Do you think Usman is doing the right thing by challenging for the 205 lbs title or should he have considered 185 lbs? Where do you put Usman amongst the greatest mixed martial artists of all time? The light heavyweight division is currently ruled by the recently newly crowned champion Jiri Prochazka who will either face #1 ranked light heavyweight Glover Teixeira in a rematch or will fight #2 ranked Jan Blachowicz for his first title defence sooner or later.
