“Shame on all of us”- Michael Chandler issues a heartfelt apology to Charles Oliveira for betting against him at UFC 274

Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira were both able to achieve monumental finishes at UFC 274

Michael Chandler almost had the most remarkable performance of any athlete at UFC 274, only if the main event never happen. Like their fight for the title back at UFC 262 Charles stole Michael’s thunder in the main event after his classic Do Bronx performance, capped off with a first-round finish of Justin Gaethje.

However, one thing you won’t be able to tell at the first glance looking at Michael Chandler is how much of a humble human being he is under all that muscle. Earlier in the week, he like many others had predicted that Justin Gaethje’s power would be able to finally put down Oliveira for good. The scandal at the weigh-in where Charles missed weight and was stripped of his title might have just boosted his belief that Gathje had this in the bag.

But come fight night, a few other martial artists can match the resolve of Charles Oliveira. Though Chandler was right in saying that Gaethje had enough power to put Do Bronx” on the canvas, he was wrong to think he would stay there. Despite eating some heavy shots at the hands of “The Highlight” Charles persevered, eventually tiring out Gaethje and then making the man who repeatedly called him a “quitter” tap out in front of his home crowd. All within the very first round. You can’t get any more badass than that.

Michael Chandler says he and Charles Oliveira have unfinished business

Michael Chandler realized and accepted his mistake coming out with an apology to Charles at the post-fight press conference. He said, “Shame on all of us forever, ever doubting Charles,” said the former Bellator Champion. He continued, “Gaethje had him hurt, Oliveira had Gaethje hurt and well you get on the ground with Charles, he’s gonna submit you” jokingly saying anyone but himself as he was able to reverse slam Oliveira in their bout when Charles had his back.

Chandler detailed on how satisfied he was in seeing Charles blossom into the fighter he is today. He said quoting Gathje’s analysis, “He was unreliable, he had a spotty record, he couldn’t be relied upon to string together good performances” mentioning how Charles Oliveira the boy transformed into the man that is Champion today.

Chandler accepted that he lost against Oliveira, but that they still have unfinished business as he still wishes to have “the 12 pounds of leather and gold” with the UFC’s name strapped across his waist.
