On the main card of UFC 274, Michael Chandler defeated fellow lightweight contender Tony Ferguson for possibly his biggest win in the UFC thus far.

Ferguson scored an unexpected takedown on Chandler early in the bout, but the former Bellator lightweight champion immediately recovered. When the fight continued, ‘Iron’ began throwing bombs, which allowed Ferguson to deliver counterpunches.

Chandler decided to change things up and go for a takedown. ‘Iron’ was able to hold a dominant position after fighting off Ferguson’s guard and rained down hard ground strikes on his opponent till the finish of the round.

Chandler delivered a front kick that got Ferguson flush on the chin in the second round, which was one of the night’s highlights. ‘El Cucuy’ was knocked out cold and slammed onto the canvas face first.

Tony Ferguson is regarded as a UFC great, and for Michael Chandler, it was a bittersweet occasion. He admits that he is proud to knock him out, but he also holds him in high regard.

In a recent interview with, Ariel Helwani, he stated, “We’re in the business of separating guys from consciousness but Tony Ferguson has been a guy who has helped build the lightweight division. My thoughts and prayers are with him and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery.”

He further reacted to the Viral image of Tony absorbing the leg strike which knocked him out, he stated, “I feel more bad for him than I feel more proud for myself, it’s one of those pictures where you are like that damn, that could be any of us, mixed martial arts is such a ruthless tough game and we’ve all been on the wrong side of those exchanges and we’ve all been on the right side of those exchanges.”

He brought up the fact that the meme will stick to Tony forever, he stated, “Those pictures will live forever on the internet and he has become a meme and that kind of stuff if anything should make people love the sport more, that no matter what we’re braving the unknown and braving the harassment.” 

Chandler used his post-fight interview time to ask for a bout at 170 pounds with Conor McGregor, but he also used social media to address a prospective rematch with Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight title and what he believes is Nate Diaz’s misplaced bravado.
