Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev successfully defended his title at UFC 294 against Alexander Volkanovski. He knocked Volkanovski out in round one with a high-head kick. Now, Michael Chandler has proclaimed his plans to knock out Conor McGregor and the lightweight king within a year. Chandler talked about it as he took to X. He was met with unsupportive reactions from the fans of the sport.

After the UFC 294 win, this is what Chandler had to say about his plans:

12 month plan…KO Conor and KO Islam. I’ve calibrated to right where I need to be. Settled in. See you soon boys."

A fan said, “Islam finishes you in 1 bro.” Chandler took to X again, following UFC 294 to pen another message. Confident in his chaotic style, Chandler announced himself the “kryptonite” for Makhachev. Chandler wrote:

Islam hasn't fought anyone who sees "red" - hasn't been in a dogfight - he has fought polished guys…the dogfight is his kryptonite. #ufc294.

Chandler has also expressed his plans for the Irishman. A fight between them has been in the works for long. Due to McGregor’s delayed entry into the USADA testing pool, it is yet to be announced. McGregor had taken to X recently to confirm that he had submitted samples for the testing. Chandler looks forward to the challenge of the Irishman before embarking on a title challenge.

Both Chandler and McGregor coached in season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter earlier this year. Chandler has secured four performance bonuses out of 5 total bouts until now. This includes a Fight of the Night against Dustin Poirier at UFC 281 and a Fight of the Year against Justin Gaethje at UFC 268. He is on the lookout to conquer more opportunities

As of late, lightweight king Islam Makhachev secured a victory in a rematch with Alexander Volkanovski. Michael Chandler went on to call out Makhachev after UFC 294. When Makhachev was on the come-up, he wanted to fight Chandler. However, the matchup never materialized. But post-UFC 294, fans are riveted with a pro-Makhachev sentiment. Chandler, in turn, has been ridiculed for his callout.

CEO Dana White has said  Charles Oliveira or Justin Gaethje might be a potent opponent for Makhachev next. This means Chandler will need to successfully defeat McGregor to earn the title shot. Check out how fans reacted to Chandler’s tweets:

McGregor’s return to the USADA testing pool will surely ensure his return in the first quarter of 2024. Rumors suggest that he might headline UFC 300 with his comeback. If the matchup gets an official announcement, Chandler might get his wish sooner than he thought.
