Michael ‘Venom’ Page is one of the exciting fighters in MMA. He recently joined the UFC and will make his debut against Kevin Holland at UFC 299. Page divulged an unintentional misstep from the promotion that tipped their hand regarding their interest in him.
The longtime Bellator star explained the UFC initially reached out about him potentially becoming a free agent. This was after he had announced a bare-knuckle boxing match against Mike Perry. Page clarified he still had Bellator commitments at that time. However, the accidental inquiry revealed the UFC’s underlying interest in securing his services down the line. This is what he said:
Obviously the UFC reached out like, ‘Is he a free agent?' We're like, oh, somebody's interested, huh! The conversation remained open, if you know what I mean.Michael Page during UFC 299 media day
From there, Page suggested the negotiation process dragged initially before rapidly accelerating. Now signed to the UFC, the 36-year-old Englishman intends to make an immediate impact. Page believed an impressive victory over Holland positioned him perfectly for a fast track to title contention against current welterweight king Leon Edwards.
Michael Page’s sole focus is a successful promotional debut on March 11th as of now. If victorious, the knockout artist believed the UFC would have no choice but to expedite his push toward championship gold. Page’s unique fighting style, persona, and self-promotion present an intriguing new challenge for the UFC’s marketing machine.
Michael Page is happy to be fighting at UFC 299 rather than UFC 300
Michael Page is set to take on Kevin Holland at UFC 299. The fight is anticipated to produce absolute fireworks that possibly would not see the last round. Some fight fans lamented his UFC debut not gracing the historic UFC 300 card. However, the fearsome English striker embraced his featured role at this weekend’s UFC 299 pay-per-view.
Page recently addressed an interview. He said that UFC 299 had overshadowed April’s milestone UFC 300 event in terms of star power and compelling matchups. He seemed unfazed about missing out on UFC 300’s arguably bigger stage. Instead, he remained laser-focused on making a statement in his opening Octagon appearance against Kevin Holland.
Many branded UFC 299 as superior to UFC 300 based on its stacked lineup. The card features the bantamweight title fight and multiple high-stakes bouts with title implications across several divisions. While missing UFC 300 may disappoint some, Page seemed content blazing his unique trail on March 11th’s explosive stage. He believed this would inevitably allow him to pursue bigger fights and brighter lights.
