Michael Johnson took on Carlos Diego Ferreira at UFC Vegas 73. Johnson is a veteran MMA fighter with over 40 professional MMA bouts. Since 2019, Johnson has only lost to top competition. Recently in December 2022, he defeated Marc Diakise in a three-round affair. Diego Ferreira is a dangerous opponent, and Johnson once again lost to top competition at UFC Vegas 70.
Ferreira attempted two takedowns in the fight, but Johnson stuffed them. Johnson was also the busier striker in the bout. He landed 55.2 percent of his strikes, compared to Ferreira’s 42.2 percent. Despite Johnson finding success on the feet, his battle-tested chin betrayed him in the second round. Diego Ferreira landed an overhand right that knocked Johnson out cold.
Ferreira came into the bout with a three-fight losing streak. He lost to top lightweight fighters like Beneil Dariush, Gregor Gillespie, and Mateusz Gamrot. Ferreira went into the bout against Johnson with a determination to win. Dana White and the UFC have a pattern of cutting fighters after four consecutive losses. Luckily for Ferreira, he knocked out Johnson despite struggling to find momentum in the fight.
Johnson appears to be heading toward retirement after the fight. It remains to be seen if the UFC and Dana White will keep him around for another fight. The experience of Johnson inside the octagon remains unmatched. He also holds notable victories over former champions Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier.
