“We ain’t going nowhere” Nate Diaz promises his highly anticipated trilogy fight with Conor McGregor will happen

Diaz has said that a trilogy with McGregor will happen when the timing is right

Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor were instrumental in making sure the post Zuffa boom in the UFC had something to ride on. The two were part of the 7 most epic rounds of fighting ever seen in the organization. It was against Diaz that McGregor suffered his first loss in the UFC.
The pair first faced off when Nate stepped in at 12 days notice to replace lightweight champion, RDA who had pulled out due to injury. This was back when McGregor seemed untouchable and near invincible. Many saw Nate as just another journey man who the notorious one would make quick work of.

That night Vegas and the entire world was introduced to the will of Nate Diaz. He suffered immense damage in the first round and was a bloodied mess by the time they came out for the second. Still, Diaz managed to weather the storm and sensing the smallest sense of exhaustion, charged at McGregor with a flurry of punches, leading the Irishman into a panic take-down attempt which ultimately ended with Diaz taking his back and submitting him.

That was the night many fans truly understood that anything can happen in the sport of MMA. From then on the rematch was absolutely what was on everyone’s mind. They met again at UFC 202, and this time McGregor was better prepared to handle Nate’s endurance and perseverance. Though a close fight, Conor walked out with the judge’s nod at the end of the fifth.

This result meant that a trilogy was in the bag sometime down the line. However following this fight, the career trajectory of both these athletes was wild and very different. Conor would go on to capture the lightweight belt, have a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather and ultimately come back to the UFC to mixed results.

Nate on the other hand completely abandoned the sport until 2019 when he came back to fight Anthony Pettis walking out with a win. Since then he has refused to sign a new contract with the UFC with many fans speculating that the upcoming fight against Chimaev may be his last.
