Nick Diaz and his brother Nate, are two of the toughest men to ever step into the UFC. They lived a difficult life prior to reaching the pinnacle of MMA and this rags-to-riches background, alongside their skills in the octagon, made them fan favorites.
During the buildup to one of Nick’s most iconic fights, Georges St-Pierre often likened Diaz to the bullies he had encountered as he grew up. And at the fight’s press conference, “Diablo” shut down these claims by St-Pierre. “How many times you had a gun to your head Georges? How many of your best friends’ been shot through the chest with a 45?… We all had to deal with these things in life…” said Nick Diaz.
He also explained why he took issue with GSP calling and likening him to a bully during this fight’s buildup. “It’s hard times for everybody and a lot of times this is what makes us fighters…I hate everybody pulling the bully card. If it wasn’t for the things I went through, I wouldn’t have made it in life.” Quotes like these have helped endear Diablo to the UFC fanbase. He is never afraid to say what he truly feels and does not care if the consequences of saying it are to his detriment.
Despite their heated rivalry, Nick Diaz took some time out to pose with ‘Mini Georges St-Pierre’
Diaz and St-Pierre have one of the most intense rivalries in UFC history. Their animosity was nearly theatrical, and their highly anticipated bout at UFC 158 did not disappoint. Diaz, however, did not seize the chance and did not win the welterweight championship. Despite this, Nick Diaz made time in 2013 to make a little GSP fan’s day.
In a more heartwarming turn of events, the Stockton native once took a picture with a young fan dressed up as Georges St-Pierre. Despite their fierce antagonism, Diaz agreed to the little fan’s request. Nick faced off, as he would before a fight, with the fan for a photo, which went viral for all the right reasons.
The fans’ adoration for the Diaz brothers is partly due to this. Despite their trash language and devil-may-care attitudes, the Stockton residents enjoy plenty of pleasant moments. This is precisely what endears them to their admirers. And now, he has even made peace with his longtime rival as they even shared an awkward and somewhat tense backstage encounter at UFC 266.
