‘People with spotlight should help people’- Paddy Pimblett wants to utilise his fame to promote men’s mental health

Paddy Pimblett has an emotional message after win

Paddy Pimblett submitted Leavitt with a rear naked choke to raise his UFC record to 3-0. Leavitt had some success in the opening round, knocking Pimblett to the ground twice and attempted to control the situation there. But in the final seconds of the round, the British fighter was still able to score a number of critical blows.

Then, early in round two, he outmuscled Leavitt, taking control of the situation close to the cage before applying the rear naked choke. After the battle, Pimblett gave an emotional speech to the crowd in which he honoured his friend, who tragically passed away last month at the age of four after suffering a rare form of cancer.

Despite the challenges, Pimblett was still able to maintain his perfect UFC record. In the second round of their lightweight match, he rear-naked choked Leavitt to end the fight. Pimblett wants to use his platform to raise awareness of men’s mental health concerns and to encourage men to seek help if they need it.

Post the fight he stated, “Women talk to each other. Men feel like, ‘I can’t go and say that to him because he’ll think I’m a little emotional.’ That’s what men think, but as I said in the cage, I’d much rather my friend come to me and speak to me and cry on my shoulder [than I] have to cry when I’m carrying his coffin a week later. Split-second decisions ruin lives and that’s what happened this weekend.”

He further stated, “You know, women speak to each other all the time if you’ve got something. Lads don’t. They sit there and bottle it up, and they end up taking their own lives, and that’s something you can’t take back. Men just need to talk more.  they just need to get it off their chest.”

He wishes to advocate for mental health in men by channelling the fame he possesses, he stated, “People with a bit of spotlight should help people. We should have to give back. I just like giving back. I also thinking about doing the mental health thing”
