Chimaev and Queen Elizabeth were the two most hated people at UFC 279
Khamzat Chimaev and The Queen may never have thought they’d ever have something in common but thanks to a Vegas crowd they do. UFC crowds are known to be unruly at times and this week both the wolf and the monarch suffered the brunt of it..
Chimaev was the target for everyone this weekend in what was supposed to act as his crowning moment. The event was originally marketed around the main event between Diaz and Chimaev, a match many considered to be a lay-up for Chimaev and an equally undeserving farewell for Diaz.
Since the start of the week, Chimaev was caught up in fights with other fan-favorite fighters including Paulo Costa and Kevin Holland. In fact the brawl between him and Holland led to the cancellation of the press conference. All this came to a head when he missed weight by 8 lbs and scrapped the original main event causing a massive rescheduling of the entire card.

For this Chimaev earned the ire of the Vegas crowd and they let him know every time he was in their sight. Chimaev was booed every time he showed up on screen throughout the event. However, someone who shared the same fate was a completely unexpected victim.
The UK lost its longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth the Second. While the reaction to her death was mixed at best, the UFC made sure it was unanimous. During the prelims, the arena displayed a tribute to the monarch on the big screen.
Right on cue, the (possibly) drunk Vegas crowd showered the late monarch with boos. The reaction to her death among many former colonies has been the same and regardless the US was a former colony though not entirely the same.
The UFC crowd has shown to be patriotic a lot more than not. An example was the loud pop Nate Diaz’s statement at the ceremonial weigh ins, “Real Gangsters come from America” received. Even more notably during the US-China tensions of 2021, Zhang Weili was booed in her return to the octagon at Jacksonville, Florida.
The last time she performed for the UFC, Zhang delivered arguably the greatest fight in Women’s MMA history in her 5-round showcaze with Jędrzejczyk.
