Colby Covington, the brash and outspoken UFC welterweight contender, has sparked yet another controversy. He claimed that Belal Muhammad, the backup fighter for Covington vs. Leon Edwards at UFC 296, would never earn a title opportunity. Covington made these remarks during a pre-UFC 296 press conference when questioned about the likelihood of defending his championship against Muhammad in the future.
Muhammad is presently ranked second in the welterweight category. When asked about a hypothetical championship showdown versus Muhammad if he wins on December 16th, Covington did not mince words.
No, who wants to fight a racist? I mean, could you imagine if I said someone earned something off of the color of their skin? That's absolutely despicable, it's disgusting…He's not getting a title shot. There will be no title shot for him.Colby Covington during the UFC 296 Media Day
Despite Muhammad’s ranking and merit, Covington opposed the notion. He emphasized that Muhammad’s actions and statements had disqualified him from eligibility. Colby Covington claimed that, unlike Muhammad, he had earned his superstar status through his achievements as a more prominent and accomplished fighter.
Covington’s comments are a continuation of the two fighters’ ongoing feud. Belal Muhammad previously accused Covington of making racially offensive remarks. The friction between them has enhanced the drama around the UFC 296 event.
