American Top Team is one of the biggest MMA gyms in the world. They have acclaimed UFC fighters like Dustin Poirier, Bo Nickal, and Jorge Masvidal, among a select few who train there. The gym’s official X account’s hilarious tweet went viral due to the sports association with acclaimed Canadian rapper Drake.
The Drake curse is a thing. The recent loss of Israel Adesanya to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 proved it. Drake has lost a lot of money by betting on sports teams and fighters. Israel Adesanya was a – 600 favorite going into the fight. Nevertheless, Drake’s bet on Adesanya failed miserably. It caught the attention of American Top Team, a.k.a ATT. The ATT X account posted, “Dear Mr. @Drake Please don’t bet on any of our fighters. Respectfully #AmericanTopTeam#JustSayNo#GodsPlan#UFC”. The GodsPlan hashtag is a sly joke at Drake’s song of the same name.
Israel Adesanya lost a lopsided decision to Sean Strickland at UFC 293. All the judges scored the contest 49-46 in favor of Strickland. Adesanya is cordial with ATT fighters Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier. Poirier and Adesanya exchanged respect during their interaction at the UFC 276 weigh-in show. Masvidal and Adesanya shot an ad together for EA Sports UFC 4.
Adesanya, Poirier, and Masvidal have all lost their last bouts. Masvidal retired after losing to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287, where Adesanya defeated Alex Periera to win back the title. Dustin Poirier was KOed by Justin Gaethje at UFC 290 for the BMF title. Gaethje attended UFC 293 as a guest fighter.
Israel Adesanya wearing red shorts had a hidden reference to Might Guy of Naruto
UFC 293 ended in an upset victory for Sean Strickland against Israel Adesanya. Strickland has long been accusing Adesanya of being a CCP sympathizer. Strickland even talked about Adesanya wearing the red shorts as a form of Chinese appeasement. However, Adesanya wearing the red shorts had nothing to do with China.
The former middleweight champion is an avid anime, and his favorite anime is Naruto and its sequel, Naruto Shippuden. Adesanya wearing the red shorts referenced to the “eight inner gates” reference of the anime character, Might Guy. Might Guy is one of the strongest characters in the Naruto anime. His most powerful version is when he becomes the “red mist” by opening the “8th gate”. His second most powerful version is when he opens the “7th gate” and becomes the “blue beast.” Adesanya used the aforementioned reference on Instagram before his UFC 293 fight.
Adesanya has used anime references before and during his fight. He recreated the “Rock Lee versus Gaara fight” when he fought Anderson Silva. He also used the Death Note reference before his title-winning performance against Robert Whitaker at UFC 243.
