“Easier for me to get title shot” – Robert Whittaker backs Alex Pereira to win fight against Israel Adesanya
Robert Whittaker previews Israel Adesanya vs Alex Pereira
Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker gives his thoughts on the upcoming grudge title fight between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira. The Australian believes he could get another title shot depending on how that fight plays out.
The UFC middleweight division has a fantastic rivalry at hand. UFC 276 was the perfect event for the promotion to set the stage for this long-time rivalry between the champion Israel Adesanya and the recent addition to the roster, Alex Pereira. With wins from both of the fighters, two weeks ago, the UFC is already working on making this fight work. Robert Whittaker, former UFC champion gives his take on the grudge match.
Robert is booked to fight Marvin Vettori at UFC Fight Night: Paris in the month of September. Whittaker is coming off a loss against Adesanya in a title rematch and a trilogy between the two looks highly unlikely. Whittaker is aware of this and roots for Pereira in the upcoming middleweight title bout. “Alex, because it makes getting that title fight easier. Getting a third fight against Izzy is much harder than getting a first fight with Alex. I would have to lean towards that,” Whittaker told Submission Radio when asked who he’d like to win the fight.
Robert Whittaker previews Adesanya vs Pereira grudge fight
Alex and Izzy have previously met each other during their time in GLORY kickboxing. The two have met each other twice, and the Brazilian holds two wins over the Kiwi with one devastating knockout win. Pereira is considered to be the kryptonite to the middleweight champion. No one has been able to defeat Izzy in the middleweight division and this creates a lot of hype for this fight.
Talking to Submission Radio, Whittaker previewed the fight. “The big thing is going to be how Alex takes shots. How he handles the shots from Adesanya with the smaller gloves. It is not like Adesanya had an impossibly hard time hitting Alex in their kickboxing fights,” said Whittaker in the interview.
“Adesanya has got some of the best defensive strikings in the game,” Robert praised his rival. It will be interesting to see how this fight decided the future of the middleweight division. Will Pereira end Izzy’s dominant run in the UFC, this is the best question at hand.
