“He is a master of that game,” Robert Whittaker previews UFC 276 title fight between Israel Adesanya and Jared Cannonier
Jared Cannonier- Robert Whittaker- Israel Adesanya
UFC 276 takes place earlier next month and the former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker must’ve some say about the main event since it’s a 185 lbs title fight after all. Whittaker last fought attempting to avenge his loss against current middleweight champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 271 back in February 2022, which he, unfortunately, lost leading to an 0-2 record against Adesanya in their rivalry now. Adesanya now headlines UFC 276 in his fifth title defence against Jared Cannonier.
Cannonier has one of the most unique runs in the UFC. For the man who started at heavyweight, Cannonier changed his anatomy as a fighter as his career advanced forward to eventually fight at middleweight. Cannonier is now 5-1 in the division. On the other hand, Adesanya is undefeated in the division while reigning over it as the champion for more than 2 years and 4 successful title defences with the #3 position in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Robert Whittaker presumes a tough fight for Jared Cannonier ahead in Israel Adesanya
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Whittaker talked about various things including what led to the rescheduling of his fight against Marvin Vettori, his love for playing Skyrim, and much more. In the midst of this, Whittaker was also asked to preview how he sees the fight between Adesanya and Cannonier going.
“[For] Jared, it’s going to be a hard fight for him, we’re going to have to see something different…He [Cannonier] has been kept on the outside, he can be kept at reach and when he’s there he doesn’t have the most success and Israel is a master of that sort of game… he is a wily fellow to try and hit,” says Whittaker.
What do you make of Whittaker’s assessment of the main event of UFC 276? Do you feel the same way about the fight? Who do you think wins? Are we bound to see a trilogy match between Adesanya and Whittaker someday down the line? Considering how close was the second fight, Whittaker is probably the closest competition it seems there is to Adesanya’s eliteness in skillset, it’s up to Cannonier to prove us wrong and pull off a massive upset for the MMA world.
