Israel Adesanya received a lot of backlash for his performance at UFC 276. His rival Robert Whittaker talks about the criticism and gives his thoughts on the champ’s fight against Jared Cannonier.

UFC 276 was one of the most hyped PPV events of the year given how stacked the entire card was from top to bottom. To make things amazing there were two title fights headlining the event and one of them was the middleweight title matchup of Israel Adesanya vs Jared Cannonier. On paper, this was an amazing fight and was expected to have a lot of action in the main event.

The reality of course was quite underwhelming for fans as the fight was not filled with highlight reels but Izzy outpointing his opponent through the five rounds. Fans gave Izzy a lot of flak for not bringing the action like it was promised. Robert Whittaker talks to Submission Radio in the latest interview and gives his thoughts on Izzy’s style of fighting.

“It wasn’t what he sold it to be. They said there was going to be this and that, and no. None of that came through. That is the problem of talking it through like that,” said Robert talking to Submission Radio. “I think Adesanya is the best defensive striker in the game. His body was built for it and he knows how to utilize that skill set to the highest ability. That’s the sort of fight it was.”

Whittaker does agree that the champion fought defensively. Robert then complimented his rival’s fighting technique and commends it as one of the toughest to break down in the UFC. “I think people are going to find it hard to dethrone him just because of the way he fights.”

Whittaker is coming off a fight against Adesanya where he experienced a similar fight to that of Jared Cannonier. Izzy was very smart with his approach against Whittaker in the rematch and did just enough to defend his belt yet again. From Robert’s perspective as a fighter, he does not see anything wrong with the way Adesanya fights.
