“Height disadvantage is ANNOYING,” Robert Whittaker talks MAJOR obstacles on way to moving up to light-heavyweight

Robert Whittaker

After having successfully moved from welterweight to middleweight several years ago, Robert Whittaker is thinking of making another move up the weight class, but the Australian has some strong reservations. Whittaker, the former UFC middleweight champion last fought at UFC 271 when he lost the rematch to succeeding and current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Whittaker is now returning inside the Octagon against former UFC title challenger Marvin Vettori.

The light-heavyweight division is one of the most exciting divisions in the current roster. The current champion, Jiri Prochazka won the UFC belt in just his third UFC fight against the preceding champion Glover Teixeira. Now, Prochazka is looking forward to a rematch against Teixeira, hopefully by the end of this year or definitely next year. But another former champion, Jan Blachowicz, wants to jump on the train and seize the opportunity by fighting Prochazka before Glover and making what Jan has called “the biggest MMA fight in the history of Europe.”

In an interview with Submission Radio, Robert Whittaker talks about his upcoming fight against Marvin Vettori, his experience being in a European nation for the first time, his reaction to Luke Rockhold’s retirement, his reaction to Leon Edwards’ KO of Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 and much more. In the midst of all, Whittaker talks elaborately about the steps and reservations he concerns himself with while potentially moving up to light-heavyweight in the near future.

“I’ve been thinking about [going up to] 205 for fair bit,” says Whittaker “But the problem is I wouldn’t go to 205 to come back down to 185… I don’t wanna go to 205 as a fat 185, right? [laughs] You see a lot of guys try that and gets starched and then they come back down. It doesn’t make sense… Putting on muscle, getting trainer for wait, got to do all the bits and bobs then and there. But I’ve been thinking about 205, I think it will be a more natural weight for me personally. But the height disadvantage is annoying, I don’t know if I want to deal with that…” continues Whittaker.
