It is common for a fighter, or any athlete for that matter, to gift their dear ones. That is when they come into money. However, Sean O’Malley puts stock into whatever he promised. The bantamweight champ spent a substantial amount on his mother and partner even before bagging the title gold. He is currently gearing up for UFC 299, where he faces Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera for a second time.
UFC 299’s fight card takes place Saturday at Kaseya Center, Miami. Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera marks the sole skid, blemishing O’Malley’s undefeated status. Ahead of this, notable athletes from the main/prelim cards participate in Fight Week scrums at the UFC Host Hotel. The current champ has also done social media rounds and sitdowns. One such instance saw him say:
For Mother's Day, I gave my girl, and my mom 50,000 each...You gotta spoil the mamas. They're good people, they take care of me...Don't know where I'd be without them, so I had to, you know, hook them up...I slack on Mother's Day and birthdays...Sean O’Malley in conversation with GQ Sports
This was during the “How UFC Champ Sean O’Malley Spent His First $1M” segment for GQ Sports. ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor recently went viral for a similar segment detailing why his Tecnomar For Lamborghini 63 yacht was an impulse buy. In the case of ‘Suga,’ the incident in conversation was way before his UFC 292 win against Aljamain Sterling.
O’Malley was seen on his YouTube channel, surprising his mother and wife. Suga gave them a day out, getting their nails done and treating them for Mother’s Day. He also gave them some cash, each amounting to $50,000. Many fans lauded the action. Here’s hoping he maintains such a sweet disposition in his title defense aftermath.
Sean O’Malley remains unfazed by loss to Marlon Vera ahead of UFC 299
Sean O’Malley will make his maiden defense soon at UFC 299; he goes up against Marlon Vera – the only one to beat him. However, he remains nonchalantly unbothered ahead of his first UFC bantamweight defense.
O’Malley returns to action long after last August against Vera in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 299. Although he suffered a perennial nerve injury, incurring a loss in the first fight, he is sure of his mettle now. As such, he knows he can get the job done. This is what Suga said:
Yeah, that fight never necessarily bothered me...Look, where I’m at now...That fight plays out a different way, I win that fight, and then next fight I fight somebody I wasn’t ready for, and I lose, and my career completely plays out differently...I'm grateful for everything that’s happened, but yeah, that fight has never really bothered me...Sean O’Malley during UFC 299’s Fight Week Media Day
He and Vera fought back in 2020. Vera won by first-round TKO after damaging O’Malley’s leg stance. While Sean O’Malley has no love lost for Vera, he remains adamant that he did not underestimate him either. Only time will tell if the fight plays differently the second time at UFC 299.
