Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley could face the undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov in the future. O’Malley considers it as the Russian vs. Irish rematch legacy fight to that of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 229. O’Malley and Umar had a back-and-forth recently.

O’Malley’s prediction of lightweight king Islam Makhchev conceding to Leon Edwards received a daring reply from the bantamweight prospect. If and when the fight happens, it will likely break PPV records. O’Malley touched upon Umar on the BrOMalley Show Episode 107. This is what he said:

I saw Umar in the bathroom…swear to God this motherf**ker was washing his feet dude…He said 'thank you,' I said for what - he said, you know, I talked good about him, said he was a good fighter, which he is. Um. And I said, you know, we're gonna fight someday. You're gonna make it up to the top with big daddy!

The undefeated Nurmagomedov is quite a prominent 135lber. More so than the current #1 Merab Dvalishvili, who had quite a body-slamming display of strength at UFC 298. Fighters have ducked Umar Nurmagomedov in the bantamweight division. Only the ‘fearless’ Cory Sandhagen selflessly agreed to fight him without contextual gain.

However, Nurmagomedov expressed much angst on UFC being unable to book him substantial clashes. Coversing with James Lynch for Inside Fighting, O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, even advocated a safety net in a contractual clause for the champ. With the #13 bantamweight having only fought a few times, he wants to play it safe for his fighter. The fight will definitely happen but when it will happen remains a question in the minds of MMA fans.

Sean O’Malley receives the support of Umar Nurmagomedov for the upcoming match

Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley makes his maiden defense against Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 299. At 17-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC, Vera is the only one to defeat O’Malley. ‘Suga’ plans to rectify at the March 9 headliner at Kaseya Center in Miami. An injury to his peroneal nerve had caused him to lose his first fight with Vera via TKO.

Umar finally faces Bekzat Almakhan next at UFC Vegas 87 after a long layoff. He talked about the upcoming UFC 299 title fight featuring O’Malley and Vera. This is what Umar said:

I think Sean O’Malley is going to smash this guy because their last fight, ‘Chito’ won because O’Malley got injured... We don’t know what’s going to happen in this fight if he (didn’t get) injured, because until he was injured, O’Malley was smashing him...

Umar Nurmagomedov expects O’Malley to defeat Vera. Top contender Merab Dvalishvili is the next in the running for the title gold. Dana White announced recently at UFC 298’s post-fight presser. Speaking on the matter, Umar Nurmagomedov commended the Georgian’s win. However, he remained confident about defeating Merab if the fight ever happened.
