Sean O’Malley is undoubtedly the biggest name in UFC after his win at UFC 292. He knocked out Aljamain Sterling in the second round. Mainstream media has always talked about the superstar potential of O’Malley. His victory helped him attain the status of a superstar. Only a select few in the MMA realm have attained such a level of fame. The biggest name is surely that of Conor McGregor. Just like Conor McGregor, Sean O’Malley has also recently received an opportunity to appear in Hollywood.
McGregor already has two documentaries bearing his name. Conor McGregor: Notorious and McGregor Forever have been quite successful. In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, O’Malley revealed the offers he received to act in films before the fight with Sterling. He said, “I got offered an acting role, a decent one, before the fight, to film after the fight.” Suga claimed to have turned down the chance and wanted to focus on fighting.
O’Malley has an entertaining presence during podcasts. He has his own channel and livestreams games such as Fortnite. Suga’s presence would attract the attention of Hollywood films. Coming into the title fight, Sterling stated that he wanted to profit from all the fans and fame that O’Malley had even outside the octagon.
Defending the title has always been a tough task for all champions. The contenders in bantamweight pose potential threats to O’Malley. It could prove fatal for O’Malley if he does not take fighting seriously. If he does intend to follow up on the stardom like McGregor, he may have to give up his presence within the octagon. The Notorious clearly made that sacrifice.
Similarities between Sean O’Malley and The Notorious
Sean O’Malley’s recent title win took the MMA world by storm. He defeated the reigning champion, Aljamain Sterling, via TKO. Since then, his superstar status has gone through the roof. Similarities between him and Conor McGregor are being made now more than ever. While the Irishman remains in a league of his own, O’Malley might attain that level.
O’Malley managed a similar finish against Sterling as McGregor did at UFC 194. Conor McGregor defeated Jose Aldo with a swift counter-left hook while Sean O’Malley landed a counter right-hand strike. Outside combat, both fighters are recognized as adept trash talkers and possess a strong presence in the mainstream media.
After UFC 292, McGregor praised O’Malley for his win. It is possible that fight fans may see them both on the same card in December. O’Malley will likely co-main event the card against Marlon “Chito” Vera while McGregor fights Michael Chandler in the main event.
