“Put him into One or Bellator” – Sean O’Malley reveals the move that could’ve changed Petr Yan’s career trajectory

O'Malley and Yan in action at UFC 280

Sean O’Malley had recently rewatched his match at UFC 280 and believes he was very close to destroying Petr Yan’s UFC career with his knee strike in the third round. O’Malley won this fight against Petr Yan via Split decision with the MMA community questioning him being the rightful winner. The majority of fans and Pundits believe Petr Yan was robbed.

Recently speaking on The MMA Hour podcast Sean said, “I was dangerous in the third, too. I just about took Yan’s head off. I kneed him, cut him open, landed a couple of flurries, and threw another knee when he was up against the cage. That might’ve really sent him away from the UFC. I know he’s talking about maybe not being in the UFC. That knee would’ve put him in ONE FC or Bellator”

By defeating Yan, O’Malley has delivered on the hype surrounding him and show the world why he is the next big thing in the Bantamweight division. O’Malley’s victory over Yan has made him the number-one contender for the Bantamweight title and will be next in line to challenge the Bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling.

In the aftermath of UFC 280, Aljamain sterling thought Petr to be the rightful winner as most people in the MMA community. Despite their past rivalry, he felt that the former champion had won the first and second rounds and expressed sympathy for Yan. But recently the Bantamweight champion seems to have changed his mind

Aljamain Sterling recently rewatched the  Sean O’Malley and Petr Yan match on his youtube channel. After re-watching the match he changed his opinion about the match. Sterling reflected on the match and said the first round between Sean O’Malley and Yan reminded him of his second fight with Yan. The champ believes if Yan could have done some damage and taken control of the match the decision could have been in his (Petr’s)favor.

Sterling said on his Youtube channel, “Round one was really hard to score. It reminded me of my first round with Yan, the second time…If Yan did the damage and got control time, then I agree that Yan should’ve won round one. Watching the fight while warming up in the back room, I felt Yan won the fight… Razor thin fight. I don’t think it was a robbery by any means… Really good fight”

The fight between Yan vs Sean will still be one of the most controversial matches in recent UFC history. Nevertheless, Sterling has chosen to acknowledge that O’Malley has rightfully won the fight and earned his shot at the Bantamweight championship. The clash between “Sugar” and the “The Funk Master” has the potential to be the next super fight in the UFC.
