Sean O’Malley is the UFC’s latest superstar. The Montana native won the bantamweight title from Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292. After the victory, O’Malley talked about his future plans in MMA and a potential crossover to boxing.
Devin Haney, the undisputed boxing lightweight champion, and Suga have engaged in a war of words on social media. Haney posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Nothin will break me..” O’Malley commented on the post by saying, “I would.” Haney further reposted the comment with the caption, “I guess yall MMA punks haven’t learned yet..” The undisputed boxing champion referenced the recent losses of MMA fighters who lost inside the boxing ring. In his recent bout, Haney defeated Vasily Lomachenko via a controversial decision.
Sean O’Malley was initially thought to be looking for a fight with Gervonta Davis. The O’Malley-Haney interaction on X is a new development. Davis is one of the most devastating punchers in boxing. O’Malley, on the other hand, is one of the most precise counterstrikers in MMA. Both Davis and Haney are undefeated in boxing whilst O’Malley has a single loss in his MMA career.
Suga is presumed to take on Marlon Vera in December. No official announcement has been made, but it seemed like the direction that the UFC was going for. Vera is the only fighter to defeat O’Malley in professional MMA. O’Malley’s star power could potentially make the fight. Being a big story has advantages, and the bantamweight champion is hell-bent on using it.
Javier Mendez already previewing Sean O’Malley vs. Umar Nurmagomedov like Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
The potential showdown between Sean O’Malley and Umar Nurmagomedov draws comparisons to the Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight. O’Malley, the current bantamweight champion, has the potential to face Umar, an undefeated rising star. Umar’s career trajectory mirrors that of his legendary cousin, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Javier Mendez envisioned the fight akin to Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor. He hopes this rivalry will be characterized by exciting competition by emphasizing O’Malley’s respectful demeanor compared to McGregor. Mendez praised O’Malley on his victory at UFC 292. Umar Nurmagomedov is currently nursing a shoulder injury. He was to face Cory Sandhgaen in a main event but was replaced by Rob Font.
The Khabib vs. McGregor lightweight title bout was a highly charged MMA matchup. It garnered a record 2.4 million pay-per-view buys. Moreover, Sean O’Malley has already come forth and said that his potential fight with Nurmagomedov would likely be like Khabiv vs. McGregor.
