“Maybe he is stupid,” Sean O’Malley speaks on why would Petr Yan accept a fight with him at UFC 280

Petr Yan-Sean O'Malley

Sean O’Malley is well on his way to becoming a top contender, provided he gets past the former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan come UFC 280 on October 22, 2022, in Abu Dhabi. O’Malley last fought at UFC 276 when the fight ended as a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke by O’Malley towards his then opponent Pedro Munhoz. O’Malley immediately booked himself against Yan within a few days. O’Malley is so far 15-1 with a no contest in his overall MMA career.

Yan last fought at UFC 273 when he lost the rematch against Aljamain Sterling, therefore, declaring the latter the undisputed bantamweight champion after a controversial first fight back in 2021. Yan is a seasoned kickboxer who has notable wins over the likes of Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber, Jimmie Rivera, John Dodson, Cory Sandhagen and many more. O’Malley too is a seasoned striker with 6 knockouts in his 10 UFC fights so far.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, O’Malley talks about fighting with Yan, why he quit streaming on Twitch, his reaction to Nate Diaz vs Khamzat Chimaev bout, Henry Cejudo’s comeback and much more. In the midst of all O’Malley tries to figure out why would Petr Yan accept a fight against him.

“I wasn’t expecting him to accept it, to be honest,” says O’Malley “It’s a risky fight for Petr, he’s not stupid, well maybe he is. He’s got to look at me and know that I have legitimate skills. I am not really in the top 10. But I think in his mind a win over me is a huge win… a win over me isn’t nothing, I am the biggest name in the bantamweight division, I am one of the big stamps in the UFC, so, you know I guess in those terms I am not surprised he took the fight…” he continues.

What do you make of Sean O’MAlley’s comments on Petr Yan accepting the fight? Who do you think will win come UFC 280? In the same fight card, the current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling will defend his title against TJ Dillashaw. Do you think the winner of Yan vs O’Malley should get the title shot? The fight between O’Malley and Yan is the one between a long-ranged and a short-ranged striker, it will be quite interesting to see who will use their reach more to their advantage rather than let the opponent play out the disadvantage.
