Fight fans expected a great bout in the main event of UFC 292 in Boston. “Suga” Sean O’Malley fought Aljamain Sterling for the bantamweight title. Sean O’Malley came in focused on dethroning the champion. It took him less than two rounds to complete the job as he got a TKO victory over Sterling. O’Malley’s knockout power is not something to be messed with.
The fight started in normal fashion as both fighters sized each other up. Aljamain Sterling was landing leg kicks, and Suga landed body kicks. At the end of the first round, Sterling managed to get a hold of Suga and land heavy strikes in the clinch. However, it all changed in the second round. O’Malley countered an extended strike from Sterling to land a clean right hand.
Once O’Malley landed the right hand, Sterling went down and looked rocked throughout the next sequence. Eventually, the referee stopped the fight as O’Malley started landing clean strikes at Sterling. Suga always had fan support, and now he has become a superstar, as he always envisioned.
On the other hand, Sterling will have to reconsider his future in the bantamweight division. He was a longtime champion and deserves a rematch. However, there are other contenders in the division waiting for their opportunity. Merab Dvalishvili and Cory Sandhagen wait in the wings for their shot at the title. The future of the bantamweight division looks exciting, and the fans will keep a vested interest in it.
Sean O’Malley calls out Marlon Vera after winning the title
The new bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley has only lost a single fight in his career. It came against Marlon “Chito” Vera in 2020. O’Malley’s leg got compromised when Chito landed a leg kick. He lost the ability to stand up, and Chito finished him with strikes.
O’Malley never admitted his loss to Vera after the loss. He continued to downplay Vera’s game plan and considered himself an undefeated fighter. Vera also fought on the UFC 292 PPV card in Boston. He defeated Pedro Munhoz in the opening fight. Considering both fighters won at the card, O’Malley indicated his desire to avenge his only career loss. O’Malley said, “I want Chito’s a** in December in Vegas.”
The rematch between Suga and Chito may not get booked as other contenders are in the division. Merab and Sandhagen are on a winning streak, whereas Chito only bounced back from a loss. Only time will tell if O’Malley gets his wish.
