“Suga” Sean O’Malley knocked out Aljamain Sterling in the main event of UFC 292 in Boston. The knockout was reminiscent of the iconic victory of Conor McGregor over Jose Aldo at UFC 194 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
In the aftermath of UFC 292, fans were given flashbacks of the moment when Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo to win the featherweight title. Aldo’s finish came at 13 seconds in the very first round, while O’Malley finished Sterling in the first minute of the second round. O’Malley’s growth has been similar to that of McGregor. He remains one of the most bankable athletes for the UFC. Both McGregor and O’Malley used the same technique of pull-back rear-hand straight to win the title.
UFC 292 will now be remembered similarly to that of UFC 194. O’Malley’s Irish heritage and McGregor being an Irishman remains another interesting factor. McGregor and O’Malley recently conversed during a sporting event. With the UFC needing somebody to turn heads, O’Malley has answered the call. After the victory, the Montana native called out Marlon Vera, the only person to defeat O’Malley in UFC.
O’Malley is looking to fight in December of 2023, and the UFC would likely entertain his idea. Marlon Vera, who was fighting on the undercard, defeated Pedro Munhoz. O’Malley fired shots at Vera, claiming that the fight was boring.
Sean O’Malley’s star is bright, but Conor McGregor is a bigger superstar
O’Malley has undoubtedly become a significant star for the UFC. But he still has a way to go to catch up with Conor McGregor’s level of fame and impact. McGregor’s influence in the UFC remains monumental. He essentially single-handedly brought the sport to international prominence outside of North America. His fights have generated over a million pay-per-view buys on multiple occasions. His bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov shattered all previous pay-per-view records.
McGregor’s journey to stardom was unexpected by many. He wasn’t initially favored in many of his fights as he climbed the ranks in the UFC. In contrast, O’Malley has taken a more gradual and calculated approach to his rise in the sport. McGregor’s ascent was more of a sprint, while O’Malley has opted for a marathon-style progression.
McGregor has been sidelined since his leg injury in the trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier. Although he’s rumored to be facing Michael Chandler in December, USADA regulations pose a challenge to his return. However, having Sean O’Malley ready to fight in December could indeed provide the promotion with an exciting way to wrap up the year. O’Malley’s presence could help end the year on a high note and potentially contribute to building his star power further.
