Sean Strickland and his brash personality have instigated some major viral moments within the combat sports bubble. And his recent spat with Ian Garry over the Irishman’s controversial marriage took the MMA community by storm. Recently, “Tarzan” went on an unhinged rant, on the welterweight after the latter’s vengeful callout for a middleweight bout. But that would have to wait. He faces Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297, this weekend.

On the heels of UFC 297’s pre-fight presser/ceremonial weigh-ins, commentator Jon Anik prompted a UFC 300 turnaround for the probable victor. Speaking of the historic fight card on April 13 in Las Vegas, none of the fighters have ruled it out completely. Hence, for Strickland, it might just happen to be a square-off with Garry. In a recent sitdown with TMZSports, here’s what Strickland had to say on the feuding rival –

If Ian Garry were to walk in this f***ing building right now and put a bullet in my head, I'm not mad at him. I'd probably respect him for doing it. So you try not to cross lines, you try not to talk about someone's wife and kids, but it gets f***ing blurred...I started it, I was calling him a f***ing f****t, calling his coaches f**s, I started it. I'm fully aware. It's his life.

The feud had started with Strickland triggering Garry’s “victim status,” on celebrity ensnaring from his elder wife. This was about British sports presenter and wife Layla Anna-Lee‘s 2010 publication ‘How to be a WAG‘. Despite such attacks on his wife, the 13-0 welterweight prospect recently hinted at his relationship being stronger because of it.

Conversely, though, the fighter did come up with a hit list for 2024, having faced brutal taunting on the interpersonal front. Presumably enough, the 185lbs titleholder would be on the very top of that list. However, going into UFC 297, it is yet undecided if a hash-out with Strickland would be ultimately beneficial for his title aspirations. Only time will tell who emerges the victor next.

Ian Garry calls out Sean Strickland for a grudge match

Champion Sean Strickland faces Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297 in the pay-per-view headliner at Scotiabank Arena (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Before that unsettled affair though, the 185lber already has his next callout.

Ian “Machado” Garry recently challenged the fighter. Having faced brutal swipes for his marriage to Layla Anna-Lee, the fighter is hell-bent on revenge. Recently appearing on The MMA Hour, he declared his ambition to fight Strickland at middleweight and believed that the brazen fighter wouldn’t be a champion anymore. Especially, towards the end of the year.

With Garry expressing his desire to fight Strickland at middleweight, their dispute has yet to subside. But that’s not where it ends though. Speaking on comedian Theo Von‘s ‘This Past Weekend‘ podcast #476, Strickland had broken down in tears, listing his abusive childhood. MMA Fighting had uploaded a snap of it on IG, with the welterweight dissing the ‘turntable’ situation.

It is clear where Garry has his mind at. However, with Strickland making his maiden defense, a matchup between the two does not seem viable though. Come post-UFC 297, that result may vastly vary.
