After a relatively short and uneventful title reign, Sean Strickland handed his hardware over at UFC 297. South African phenom Dricus Du Plessis edged out ‘Tarzan’ to bag a split-decision win in January. Ever since, Strickland has remained adamant on a rematch. Israel Adesanya‘s return could possibly postpone a potential rematch.
Veteran welterweight Michael Chiesa accidentally hinted Du Plessis vs. Adesanya was in the works. Later, Adesanya revealed an offer to headline UFC 300 in April. With Strickland’s ardent claims of robbery, Du Plessis pivoted to public opinion during their X to-and-fro. Doubling down on an immediate rematch, here’s what Strickland said:
I won. Dana [White] said I won. [Joe] Rogan said I won...We all know I won...I went to Canada, They shafted me. Dricus wants it. I want it...Win your title like a man, my friend...You know you got a gift from God..... If you beat me fair and square, I’ll put the fu**ing belt around your waist...I deserve that rematch, and if they don’t give me that rematch…understand it’s for one reason, they want me to shut the fu*k up.Sean Strickland via The Schmo
Dana White claimed he scored the fight for Strickland. However, he hinted at no plans to book an immediate rematch. Meanwhile, Strickland has doubled down on his claims of a headbutt, causing the momentum to shift in favor of the South African fighter. However, ‘Stillknocks’ nudged that the former champ admitted his defeat in the UFC 297 post-fight octagon interview.
Sean Strickland has indulged in respecting the slugger and brawler he found in Du Plessis. Furthermore, he felt the UFC might not want to silence him by not offering a rematch. Only time will tell if such a moment or rematch ever takes shape.
Sean Strickland advocates for immediate title rematch with Dricus Du Plessis
The main event of UFC 297 left many fight fans heartbroken when Sean Strickland lost out on his title gold to Dricus Du Plessis. Many cried robbery over the somewhat disputable scorecard (47-48, 48-47, 48-47) that saw a new crowning. Even though UFC CEO Dana White echoed fans’ opinions, he did not promptly opt for a rematch.
However, now more than ever, Strickland is fired up for such a chance. ‘Tarzan’ has argued a headbutt injury and controversial scoring for such a fallout. Hence, in prime unfiltered fashion, he wanted to brawl it out once again. On the other hand, Du Plessis opted for a public vote to choose his next opponent. Amidst all these, here’s how Strickland’s relentless efforts for a rematch have ensued:
Strickland even brazenly invoked the case of Israel Adesanya getting a rematch against Alex Pereira despite a consequential loss. An argument of logic even Aljamain Sterling had touched on, demanding a rematch of his own.
As per management, no rematch talks have progressed. But that might change soon enough. If and when that happens, Strickland will finally have his chance to regain his gold.
