UFC middleweight Sean Strickland had the worst night out of all the losers of the UFC 276 fight card, but he was mentally strong enough to come out talking about it. Strickland lost via first-round knockout to former 2 division Glory Kickboxing champion Alex Pereira. This was Strickland’s first loss in nearly 4 years and the first loss since coming up from welterweight to middleweight. Pereira is now most likely going to fight his former kickboxing rival and UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya next.

Strickland was formerly ranked #4 in the official UFC rankings for middleweight, this loss will affect his position adversely now. Regardless, Strickland is still a tough contender and a problem for a lot of fighters. He already has wins over the likes of Jack Hermansson, Uriah Hall, Krzysztof Jotko and many more. Strickland is just 31 years old and therefore has many more years of competition ahead of him.

On his official Instagram, Sean Strickland uploaded a short video on his Instagram of him reacting to his loss that comprises his mentality before the knockout, his thoughts for Alex Pereira after the fight, his coaches’ reaction and his next step as a fighter.

“Well that sucked,” said Strickland “You never want to be someone’s highlight but that’s a game we play you know. I tried to stand and bang with one of the best kickboxers. The sh**ty part about this was you know I kept thinking ‘man this is gonna be an easy fight, I see everything this guy’s throwing, I’m getting the better of the exchanges, I’m gonna beat this guy up for three rounds,’ and then halfway through I got caught…

So hats off to Alex, he’s a f**king killer, thanks to all my coaches, I didn’t get the win, suppressing them they are gonna be sad for a while and fans thank you for supporting me.
