UFC Vegas 87 saw a great fight card and intense battles. The card also saw a top contender for the Knockout of the Year fight. Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Shamil Gaziev headlined the Fight Night card. The heavyweights were set to fight a five-round battle. However, Rozenstruik defeated Gaziev via fourth-round TKO. Rozenstruik utilized his jab to batter Gaziev over four rounds. By round four, Gaziev was exhausted and essentially a sitting duck.
Rozenstruik credited his improved patience and defensive wrestling for the win. He was coming off a loss against Jailton Almeida. He stuffed all but one takedown while avoiding major damage. Staying behind his jab also limited Gaziev’s offense. Rozenstruik attacked Gaziev’s body as well. This further slowed his opponent’s pace very much. Between rounds four and five, Gaziev complained of vision issues in his corner. The fight was then waved off via TKO.
Gaziev offered very little down the stretch as his stamina faded. Blood streamed down his face from his busted nose and mouth by the fight’s end. Jairzinho Rozenstruik out-struck him by a huge margin. The loss was the first of Gaziev’s career, snapping his prior 12-fight unbeaten run. Rozenstruik believed sticking to his game plan led him to break the dangerous Russian fighter.
The Surinamese fighter fought a smart, technical battle. He avoided Gaziev’s early power by using his reach and footwork. Then he methodically chopped his opponent down as Gaziev got tired. At 35 years old, Rozenstruik showed he can still make key adjustments to his game.
