In July, Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira were scheduled to fight, but when the Brazilian failed to make weight for their welterweight bout, Thompson decided not to accept the fight, and as a result, he didn’t receive payment for successfully making weight. During an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour after the fight was called off, “Wonderboy” mentioned that discussions had been happening between his management and the organization and mentioned that he was not happy with the things going on.

Fast forward Now, ahead of his UFC 296 bout with Shavkat Rakhmonov, Thompson says things have been taken care of, and he’s happy with the result. He said,

"Me and the UFC, and my management, we’ve settled everything, so everything’s great. We settled with something we were both happy with, and that was it. It took a little bit because they have a business and a lot of stuff going on — and so have I. So my managers have been taking care of everything. But, yeah man, I was happy with everything, with what the UFC has done for me, and we got away from this last fight with a smile on our faces.”

“Wonderboy” highlighted how Dagestani’s body-attacking tactic was a contributing aspect in a reel he shared on Instagram. Thompson analyzed the fight and pointed out that Makhachev knocked out Volkanovski by taking advantage of the openings created by his consistent body shots and low leg kicks.

According to Thompson, Volkanovski’s hands dropped down to defend against the body kicks, making him susceptible to the head kick that ultimately ended the fight. Thompson himself is known for his incredible striking techniques, especially his kicks, and it seems like someone of his caliber was really impressed by Makhachev’s kick.
