WATCH: Submission GOES WRONG as Mariya Agapova chokes on tongue at UFC Vegas 60

Mariya Agapova brutally almost chokes on her own tongue, against Gillian Robertson

UFC Vegas 60, held day before in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, was one of the gnarliest UFC events to date. Brows cut open, veins on full unsheathed display, and other sights not pleasant to the human eye reared their head during the fight card.

This one might’ve been missed by the fans. Concentration (or not!) on Gregory Rodrigues’ vicious forehead injury, or Song Yadong’s eyebrow literally almost falling off. Amidst this, viewers probably did not see Mariya Agapova, while being submitted by Gillian Robertson, choking on her own tongue and turning blue!

This is the third distressing visual that fight fans have had to endure from this card, which is a testament to the gladiatorial bravado that the fighters choose to display each time they make the decision to enter the cage.

In what can be seen to be Gillian Robertson executing an ideal rear naked choke on Mariya Agapova, the latter seems to be fighting discombobulation and trying her best to remain in the fight. After putting sufficient pressure, Robertson was choking the lights off of Agapova, but here is where the visual got slightly disturbing. The Kazakh fighter, battling the choke, appeared to be biting her tongue while losing consciousness.

Biting one’s tongue can be extremely detrimental, as a loose tongue can lead to choking, which has led to near-death situations for multiple sportspersons, including ex-F1 driver Rubens Barrichello. Thankfully, Mariya Agapova did not require any medical attention as the referee stepped in at the right time and called the fight.

While most viewers must have been focusing on Song Yadong and Gregory Rodrigues’ gruesome battle wounds, Jorge Masvidal managed to pick out the exact moment that Mariya Agapova almost stumbled into catastrophe.

In a Facebook post, he highlighted an article that covered the moment, and captioned it, “HOLY F**K!?!!” Clearly, the fighter was echoing the words of the commentary team, which said in that moment that “She’s got to be careful, she’s biting her own tongue.”

Things haven’t looked upward for Agapova, which she detailed during the fight week. She was coming off the back of an injury, but could not get the surgery done due to insufficient funding, and is working as a bouncer to make ends meet.

However, no sheen must be taken away from her opponent Gillian Robertson, who must have not realized what was transpiring as she was trying to end the fight and earn her paycheck. Robertson also broke a record by becoming the female fighter with most submissions in UFC history.
