Grant Dawson asserts that the UFC’s lightweight landscape isn’t solely governed by rankings. Conor McGregor serves as a perfect exemplar. McGregor is the sport’s transcendent figure and two-division champ. He is scheduled to fight Michael Chandler in early 2024.

In a recent interview with Damon Martin of MMA Hour, Dawson shed light on the intricacies of potentially facing marquee names such as Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler. Moreover, he said that McGregor would not be coming back to fight. Dawson said, “I don’t think he’s coming back, I don’t think he’s fighting. I think he’s going through a mid-life crisis right now. I think he’s hopped up on a bunch of street drugs. We’re going kind of deep here but the thing that makes people happy isn’t chasing happiness, it’s chasing purpose.”

Dawson also highlighted that a fighter’s marketability and appeal substantially dictate bout selections beyond the obvious factor of rankings in the lightweight division. However, with an impressive 12-fight victory streak under his belt, Dawson gears up to make waves in his upcoming main event against Bobby Green at UFC Vegas 80.

Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler coached against each other at TUF 31. In the aftermath of the season, USADA regulations delayed McGregor’s return to the octagon. However, a recent social media post by “Notorious” has insinuated that his business with USADA is over. McGregor has allegedly used steroids to recover from the leg injury he suffered in the bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

Dawson’s comments reflect his belief that if he does not defeat Green like Makhachev did, he is not ready for top 10 contenders. Dan Hooker is ranked 9th in the division. Furthermore, Dawson expressed his belief that Mateusz Gamrot is an elite fighter who should be ranked in the top 3. Moreover, “KGD” has the immense belief that he could potentially dethrone Islam Makhachev.

Furthermore, Dawson showered high praise upon Johnny Eblen, the Bellator middleweight champion. He said that Eblen is the best middleweight fighter in the world and could give the middleweight contenders in the UFC a run for their money. “KGD” also mentioned about Bellator being bought by PFL.
