The Korean Zombie weighs on his decision to retire, after loss to Max Holloway (Source: Twitter)
Chan Sung Jung, or the “Korean Zombie” is still conforming to a retired life. The 17-8 striker last suffered a KO at the hands of Max Holloway. in August. This was at the main event of UFC Singapore. Both fighters still maintain an amicable strain of goodwill. Holloway even recently sent him back his lost fight gloves, after the latter’s $20,000 deed to Hawaii.
The Orthodox stance featherweight marked his second loss in a row, before that of Holloway. The previous one was with Alexander Volkanovski during their UFC 273 title contention. While Sung Jung could have decided to bounce back altogether, he abstained, knowing the toll. Speaking with MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani, this is what he had to say:
After experiencing these moments, I felt that I don’t have that chin anymore. I’ve been having brain damage over the years, so I don’t have that chin anymore. I’m not going to say any names but there are fighter who, when they were young, used to have a really good chin, but then as they get older they get brain damage, their chin gets weaker, and they get frequently dropped. If the fighter fails to acknowledge the fact that they got old and their chin got weaker, the end isn’t as lovely...The Korean Zombie on the MMA Hour

Despite never being a titleholder, Zombie is a prominent figure within UFC. The fighter is infamous for his acute striking and enormous endurance. However, Sung Jung mentioned that he “saw the punch coming” in the second round against Holloway, yet still missed it anyway. Despite being aware, his body could not reciprocate; which is how he knew he did not have an edge in the game.
Had he won, Zombie mentioned trying to get the UFC to return to South Korea to square off with Brian Ortega or Yair Rodriguez. Instead, he got to reminisce on a career he is very thankful for.
The Korean Zombie once had a readjusting scuffle with Georges St-Pierre, on a symbol
Georges St-Pierre was a force to be reckoned with in his days. At 26-2-0, he is a former two-division champion at UFC (welterweight and middleweight). He is regarded as one of the best MMA personalities ever. He was accordingly respected by every up-and-coming peer. This included The Korean Zombie (Chan Sung Jung) in his early days. But back in 2013, Zombie had requested St-Pierre to stop wearing the ‘Rising Sun’ symbol at fights.

St-Pierre used to wear a full combat-GI, with the said symbol. Unknown to him, The Rising Sun flag was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in the Second World War. The United Nations subsequently banned it after 1945. The fighter, and Hayabusa (the company that made the clothing) later publicly withdrew from the production line.
The agreeable understanding that both St-Pierre and Zombie had, only spoke volumes to their virtues. These are some of the few merits that made them both such prominent entities. More so for Zombie, despite any championship status. The fighter last fought in August against Max Holloway, before retiring.
