“Your chin is not there”- TJ Dillashaw criticizes Cody Garbrandt for essentially throwing away his career because of his ignorance
TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt
Cody Garbrandt is currently in a hard spot in UFC. The fighter has won only once in his last seven Octagon appearances. It all started when he lost his Bantamweight title to TJ Dillashaw at UFC 217 and failed to capture it again at UFC 227. Garbrandt’s last win was against Raphael Assunção at UFC 250.
Cody Garbrandt made his UFC debut in 2015 and after five consecutive wins, he fought Dominick Cruz for the Bantamweight title and won it. The fighter showed incredible performance and many assumed that it would be hard to take that belt away from him. But things didn’t go that way.
After struggling in the bantamweight division, the fighter shocked the world with his flyweight debut against Kai Kara-France at UFC 269. But unfortunately, he lost the fight via TKO. Garbrandt’s rivalry against TJ Dillashaw is one of the best we’ve seen inside the octagon. Former training partners turned competitors left it all inside the octagon, and TJ landed in a much better spot in his career.
“He’s a pretty freak athlete”- TJ Dillashaw believes Cody Garbrandt is a gifted athlete, but he’s not making good use of his abilities
Dillashaw is now expected to face the champion, Aljamain Sterling for the bantamweight strap, and in his recent interview with Brendan Schaub, he took some time to reflect upon Cody’s career. He said, “He’s a pretty freak athlete. He’s fast. He’s the fastest guy I’ve ever sparred or fought, by far the most speed, but I’m not trying to be a complete a**hole, but he’s not the smartest human being inside that cage.”
He added, “To be able to stay on the top, you’ve got to change who you are and fight to fight, he’s the exact same fighter. He’s a wrestler. He knows how to wrestle. Why not learn some jiu-jitsu and stop relying on your chin and hands because your chin is not there.”
He then advised Cody to make some adjustments in his game, if he wants to stay at the top of the division, “So change up who you are as a fighter, and he’s just not willing to do that,” TJ stated. “He’s gonna keep his head in the same spot, his hands are gonna be low, and he’s gonna throw hard, fast hooks. So after everyone sees where his weaknesses are at, and his left hand is in his pocket as he throws the right hand, just keep your left hand high and smoke him with the right. I mean, game over. We’ve seen it like five fights in a row.”
