“I’m a B.O.A.T” Tony Ferguson calls himself BEST OF ALL TIME at UFC 279 presser
Tony Ferguson
Tony Ferguson is an enigma – he will go down not only as a legend in the UFC but also as one of the quirkiest personalities to ever grace the octagon.
Fighting out of Oxnard, California; Ferguson is widely known for his frankly weird fighting style – mixing in elbows, kicks and other fight weaponry that the opponent hardly expects coming their way. This is what made him famous the world over among MMA fans, and as fans got to know him better, he became a fan-favourite as well.
Tony Ferguson used his brilliant fight IQ to propel him to a 12-fight win streak, which former lightweight title challenger Justin Gaethje sadly ended. Booked to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov just at the turn of the booming of Covid-19, Ferguson was forced to abandon the match-up against long-time rival Khabib as the Russian fighter pulled out with an injury.
“I’ll always be the champ” Tony Ferguson gives nod to his own longevity when asked about McGregor fight
Things have looked downhill for Ferguson since last winning against Cowboy Cerrone in 2019. He has lost to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush and most recently, been knocked out cold by Michael Chandler.
Some fans questioned Tony Ferguson’s ability to bounce back after the shocking face-kick KO loss to Michael Chandler. But, in the media scrum for UFC 279, Ferguson looked as quirky as ever, saying “G.O.A.Ts come and go, but B.O.A.Ts stay afloat. I’m the B.O.A.T (The best of all time)” when asked about the long-anticipated match against superstar Conor McGregor.
“I’ll always be the champ, and do what I have done for the sport” said a jubilant Ferguson, who looked to be in love with the game once again. Last time out, against Michael Chandler, the California native had looked sullen and out of place in the presser leading up to the match at 155 pounds.
The co-main event this Sunday will feature Tony Ferguson taking on Chinese Welterweight Li Jingliang, who lost in spectacular fashion to main event star Khamzat Chimaev. In what can be the deciding factor, the match-up of the two will be held at 170 pounds, meaning that the ageing Ferguson will not have to suffer a drastic weight cut as he has in the past.
A legend is out this weekend. If Ferguson loses, could this be the end of his career In the UFC? Let us know what you think!
