The co-main event of UFC 272 was scheduled between Rafael Fiziev and Rafael Dos Anjos. However, Fiziev was ruled out of the bout after he was found positive for COVID 19.

Consequently, UFC had to search for other fighters to replace Fiziev at UFC 272 this weekend. Ferguson confirmed that he was offered to step on short notice and was ready to perform.

Recently at UFC Vegas 49, Islam Makhachev defeated unranked, Bobby Green via TKO and now is very close to getting his lightweight title shot. But originally, Makhachev was scheduled to fight Beneil Dariush but due to an injury, Dariush had to withdraw his name. In that scenario, it was reported that nobody else stepped up to fight Makhachev and Green took the opportunity. When Dagestani was asked about it back then, he said nobody wants to fight him as a replacement.
