“Elbows and Great Flows” Tony Ferguson joins Jacksonwink MMA as he looks to settle down before the sun sets on his career

Ferguson has finally settled for a traditional team

Tony Ferguson revealed after his most recent fight that he would finally consider joining a traditional Martial Arts gym after years of training solo. To this extent he has finally announced that he would be joining the legendary Jackson Wink MMA Gym.

Ferguson was knocked out cold for the very first time in his career by Michael Chandler during their fight at UFC 274. However in the first round of the fight Tony looked as good as he had been before 2020. Since the Justin Gaethje fight at UFC 249, El Cucuy has struggled to get back into the win column fighting top contenders like Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler back to back.

However, it was the first round against Chandler that made Tony consider trying the traditional approach to MMA. For this fight, he had gone back to having his college wrestling coach take care of camp, compared to the previous fight camps that were run by him with occasional sparring sessions alongside Tommy Aaron.

Ferguson has been chasing that elusive win since 2020

Now in 2022 and at the age of 38 ,Tony feels like he has one last push left in him to offer. He wants to make that push at the legendary Jackson Wink camp. Tony will now train at the same gym where legends and former champions like Jon Jones, GSP and BJ Penn polished their craft.

Close to his home of California, the New Mexico-based gym has a deep pool of UFC roster-worthy talent which can help Ferguson determine his skill level within the wider roster. However one criticism the gym does get for the amount of fighters training there is have been fights where two gym members are pitted against each other, sometimes leading to conflict in the gym.

It would’ve been a problem for Tony were he to face (according to Tony at least) his old wrestling rival, Jon Jones. Tony alleged in the past that he jumped up two weight classes to wrestle Jon Jones while he was in high school. While Jon never confirmed the story, it’s a good peice of MMA lore to know.

Coach Brandon Gibson announced his decision with a photo of Tony and his son at the gym. The caption read, “It’s great to have @tonyfergusonxt in town. Ankle picks, elbows and just a great flow. I’m excited we finally get to collaborate, and I was amazed with how much time and energy he gave to the young fighters at Jacksonwink

Ferguson has dropped out of the top 10 lightweight rankings for the first time in almost a half a decade. While a title shot seems nearly unrealistic at this point in his career Ferguson has stated he would still like to try. He was recently called out by Dan Hooker who is also on a similar losing skid.
