“You got a mint?” Tony Ferguson narrates hilarious backstage story of new opponent Nate Diaz from the infamous UFC 279 presser brawl

Nate Diaz- Tony Ferguson
Tony Ferguson is a legend on his own and no matter whether it’s only proven inside the cage, there are testimonies from outside as well, at least from Ferguson’s side. Ferguson is the former-interim UFC lightweight champion who is currently on a 4-fight skid but was once known for an illustrious 12-fight winning streak with wins over the likes of Kevin Lee, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Edson Barboza, Lando Vannata, Josh Thomson and many more.
This weekend, Ferguson was supposed to make his UFC welterweight debut against a very tough opponent in Li Jingliang at UFC 279. The card was initially headlined by UFC megastar Nate Diaz and fellow welterweight Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev failed to make weight by a mark of 8 lbs. With the fight card being in jeopardy, the fighters of the last 3 fights agreed to face switched opponents and therefore, Ferguson now agreed to fight Diaz in the main event. This was a fight that should’ve happened a long time ago, but better late than never.
Tony Ferguson believes that he doesn’t need hate energy to put on a heck of a fist fight

In an interview with ESPN MMA correspondent Megan Olivi, Ferguson talks about fighting Diaz in the main event now and much more. In the midst of all, Ferguson talks about the infamous backstage brawl during the fight week of UFC 279 which led to the cancellation of the pre-fight press conference. The brawl involved over 100 people kicking, punching and throwing bottles at each other.
The fighters mainly involved were first UFC welterweights Kevin Holland and Khamzat Chimaev and then it was Diaz and Chimaev. Basically, this is all Ferguson did during the brawl but “El Cucuy” stands out regardless for his story right below.
“Nate was funny because he [Diaz] was right there yelling at somebody and I go up to him and said ‘hey do you want a mint?'” said Ferguson. “I just did random s**t, just that kind of guy. He [then] did his s**t whatever he had to do and comes back over and says ‘hey you got a mint?’ So it’s always been cordial with people. I don’t have to hate somebody and go in out there and duke it out…” he continued.
What do you make of this funny story by Ferguson? What are your thoughts on Ferguson not needing any animosity towards his opponent to do his job as an entertaining fighter?
