UFC 297 featured a women’s bantamweight title battle between Raquel Pennington and Mayra Bueno Silva. The fight had the build-up of a spectacular confrontation. However, it turned out to be a somewhat lackluster affair, dubbed by some as a “snooze fest.”

The co-main event in Toronto, Canada, pitted Raquel Pennington against Bueno Silva. Pennington had a five-fight winning streak going into the title fight. The fight started with both combatants trading leg kicks and battling for control along the cage. Bueno Silva ultimately landed a takedown in the opening round, capturing Pennington’s back and ending in a dominating position. Pennington succeeded in the second round with her jab, but Bueno Silva pressed forward and engaged in clinches. The round concluded with Bueno Silva once more on Pennington’s back.

Pennington showed tenacity in the third round, landing knees in the clinch to secure the top position. Bueno Silva seemed tired in the fourth round as the fight moved into the latter rounds. Raquel Pennington took advantage of this, hitting powerful punches and resisting off-submission attempts. Pennington initiated a clinch in the final round, gained top position, and attempted an arm-triangle choke. Although Bueno Silva defended, Pennington finished the bout with leg kicks and ground.

Despite the lack of a finish, the judges gave Raquel Pennington a unanimous victory with scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 49-45. This victory established Pennington as the new women’s bantamweight champion.
