Aljamain Sterling expressed his heartfelt condolences following the tragic passing of Adam Johnson. Johnson, a Nottingham Panthers player, suffered a fatal neck injury when accidentally kicked by his opponent, Matt Petgrave’s skate. In front of a stunned crowd of 8,000 spectators, the Sheffield Steelers’ Matt Petgrave unintentionally caused the devastating injury when their collision occurred.
The incident unfolded on a Saturday when Petgrave initially collided with one of Johnson’s teammates. It resulted in a loss of balance that led to his leg inadvertently slicing across Johnson’s neck.
The referee rushed to aid Johnson, who was bleeding profusely, and immediate on-ice emergency treatment was administered. Subsequently, Adam Johnson was swiftly transported to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. At the same time, the players returned to their respective locker rooms. Concurrently, the Nottingham Panthers declared a “significant medical crisis” and urged fans to evacuate Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
Former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling was one of the viewers watching the game live. He couldn’t believe what he saw. The fighter wrote in a tweet,

Tragic incident of Adam Johnson prompts safety measures and investigation
After the incident, the Panthers expressed their gratitude to everyone who came to support Adam last night during a very challenging situation. They mentioned that Adam was not just an exceptional ice hockey player but also a wonderful teammate and a remarkable individual with a promising future. The club will profoundly feel his absence and will always remember him.
South Yorkshire Police, who responded to an incident at Utilita Arena in Sheffield, stated that it is standard protocol to initiate an investigation when an incident is reported. A spokesperson for the police mentioned that their officers are currently present at the scene, conducting inquiries. They emphasized that the investigation into the incident is still in progress and urged the public not to engage in speculation while they continue their inquiries.
The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which regulates ice hockey in England at all levels lower than the Elite League, has advised all of its members to wear neck protectors as a precautionary measure after learning of Johnson’s passing.
Johnson was not donning a neck guard. It was deemed “unacceptable” by the EIHA for any player to perish while playing ice hockey. It has issued a “strong recommendation” that all English ice hockey players, regardless of rank, wear an authorized neck guard as of right now.
