“I’ll just retire” – UFC newbie Bo Nickal COMPLETELY DISREGARDS fighting on the prelims

Bo Nickal

Bo Nickal is one of the hottest prospects to arrive on the MMA scene in the last couple of years. And, to his credit, he has paired his hype with results.

People intently tuned in to watch the latest episode of Dana White’s Contender Series, Season 6. Their aim was mostly singular – to see phenom Bo Nickal compete, and win his UFC contract. That is exactly what happened.

In his latest fight on the DWCS, he took on fellow American Donovan Beard. The fight lasted a mere 53 seconds, as Nickal dismantled Beard and dominated every second of the fight. Landing an early takedown, he successfully executed a triangle choke to end Beard’s night early. This resulted in a UFC contract for him.

Nickal is now set to face Jamie Pickett in December. Given that he is yet to fight in the UFC, he would be expected to open the bank on the prelims or even the early prelims of a UFC card. Surprisingly, Bo Nickal has completely disregarded any such suggestion – he wants to make his debut on the main card of a UFC event.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani, he said, “Am I a prelim guy? I’m not a prelim guy! If I have to fight on the prelims, I’ll just retire, I’m done!”

Helwani, in response, let out a chuckle, which looked like it could be of gentle surprise.

However, Nickal later took to Twitter to lessen the intensity of his statement, saying, “I’ve been thinking about it a lot… If the UFC puts a card together with 10 people who are all bigger draws than me, which is doable as there are many bigger draws than me currently, I’ll fight on prelims. Pains me to say it but it’d be the right thing. What do y’all think?”

It indeed is a little perplexing to think that Nickal, who has never really fought any big names till now, would want to open up on the main card of a UFC event.

The pragmatic thing to do would be to take on the opposition that isn’t exactly a straight match to his talents, obliterate them, and build the hype. Fighting close battles at the beginning of his career might be too counterintuitive for the American wrestler.

Bryce Mitchell, upcoming star in the UFC, has had his say on the matter. In the comments of the video of Bo Nickal talking to Ariel Helwani, he wrote, “Stop belittlin our prelim fiters. i worked my way all the f*ckin way up with no hype bhind me and didnt b*tch one bit bout it. i just showed up ready to work.

Nickal has looked ready to dismantle his opposition ever since he arrived on the scene. However, as suggested by Daniel Cormier himself, he might want to be cautious about putting pedal to the metal, and work on honing the craft of fighting and gaining experience first.
