Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov went back and forth on X and verbally agreed to fight each other. The Dagestani fighter called out Petr Yan and ‘The Sandman’ after the former’s win at UFC 299. As such, this derived a response from Sandhagen who was open to fighting him. Nurmagomedov now borrowed a classic one-liner from Khabib Nurmagomedov to reply in style.
At first, Umar Nurmagomedov called out Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen for a fight on August 03 – at UFC Abu Dhabi. Sandhagen ridiculed Nurmagomedov for calling the higher-ranked fighters and fixing a date himself. So, he proposed the Dagestani a fight during International Fight Week. Without a second thought, Nurmagomedov agreed to it. As such, he referenced one of the famous lines of his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov and said:
Just send me location. Let’s go.Umar Nurmagomedov via X
Khabib Nurmagomedov used the phrase “Send me location” on multiple occasions. But, it became famous for his callout to Conor McGregor. Owing to the animosity between himself and McGregor, Nurmagomedov was ready to squash the beef anywhere and just asked for a location. As such, Umar Nurmagomedov, inspired by his cousin’s tenacity didn’t shy away from Cory Sandhagen’s offer.
Umar Nurmagomedov and Cory Sandhagen were earlier booked to fight last year at a Fight Night Event. But, the Dagestani pulled out from the fight citing an injury. From then, Nurmagomedov found it hard to find an opponent and finally fought a UFC debutant at UFC Vegas 87.
He won a lop-sided decision and extended his undefeated win streak to 17. Now, as Sandhagen once again offered Nurmagomedov a fight, things headed in the right direction for their clash to come to fruition.
Cory Sandhagen on his reasons to fight Umar Nurmagomedov
Cory Sandhagen rekindled the talks about fighting Umar Nurmagomedov just before the Dagestani’s fight at UFC Vegas 87. As such, when Sandhagen joined the UFC panelists for the weigh-in show at UFC 299 he was questioned about his reasons to fight Nurmagomedov. The main concern was that there was a significant difference in their rankings, ‘The Sandman’ was at #3 and Nurmagomedov #10.
The former interim title challenger stated he was open to fighting lower-ranked fighters if it propelled him towards the title. Cory Sandhagen didn’t worry about the rankings and just wanted the matchup that headed him to a title shot next. Considering Umar Nurmagomedov’s status in the bantamweight division and the importance UFC gave him, he wanted to fight him to solidify his spot as the next title challenger. Here is what he said:
I’m okay with that fight (vs. Umar Nurmagomedov). I’m not afraid to take a fight down in the rankings by any means as long as it pushes me closer to the dream of being a world champ, I’ll take whatever fight they want me to fight...If I beat Umar, the boogeyman, which by the way I’m the boogeyman of the division, not Umar, (I want the title shot).

Cory Sandhagen was dead set on his intentions of becoming a UFC champion. If it meant facing the dangerous contender Umar Nurmagomedov, he welcomed it with both arms. Sandhagen last fought Rob Font last year and won a dominant decision victory. However, he suffered a torn tricep and underwent surgery. As such, he eyed to return against Nurmagomedov during International Fight Week and fight for the belt later this year.
