UFC 290 became one of the most entertaining UFC events of the year with five first-round finishes. The event exceeded expectations with some spectacular performances from the fighters. However, there was one fight that shocked many fans. It featured the middleweight clash between Robert Whittaker and Dricus du Plessis. The South African powerhouse proved himself at the PPV with an impressive performance. He finished fan favorite and No. 2 ranked middleweight Robert Whittaker via TKO.
After his fight, Du Plessis called out the Middleweight champion Israel Adesanaya who came into the ring and had a heated face-off with Du Plessis. During the face-off, there was a heated exchange going on between the two, which also had the ‘N-word’ flying around. When asked about this altercation between the two fighters, Dana White replied, ” What were the racial undertones?“. White continued, “Israel is black he can say whatever he wants, I could care less, this is the fight business.”
Israel Adesanya is the champion of the middleweight division and stylistically remains one of the most dominant champions in middleweight history. He has defeated many legends, such as Anderson Silva and Yoel Romero. Adesanya recently lost to his arch-rival Alex Pereira but got his revenge at UFC 287, where he finally knocked out “Poatan” and regained his title.
Dricus Du Plessis made his UFC debut in 2020 against Markus Perez, who he defeated via knockout in the first round. He then went on to defeat UFC veteran Darren Till at UFC 282. This year, Dricus defeated Derek Brunson via TKO in the second round, which earned him a fight with No. 2-ranked Robert Whittaker.
