“Amongst the greats” Urijah Faber pours praise on Alexander Volkanovski post the latter’s UFC 273 victory
Alexander Volkanovski- Urijah Faber
UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber is everything you would want to have in a combat sports role model to exist. Not only one of the most beloved fighters in WEC-UFC history, not only the possessor of one of the most exciting fighting styles, not only a legend of the sport when he hung his gloves once and for all but Faber is an all-time pioneer for some of the fastest rising prospects who will burst a huge scene for themselves in the coming years of MMA.
Faber, the former WEC featherweight champion and the man who handed Dominick Cruz his first professional career loss, was last seen inside the Octagon in December 2019, when he lost to former bantamweight champion Petr Yan. Faber, regardless, had tons of significant wins by that time over the likes of Cruz, Frankie Saenz, Brad Pickett, Francisco Rivera, Alex Caceres, Michael McDonald, Iuri Alcantra, Eddie Wineland, Rafael Assuncao, Jens Pulver and many more.
Urijah Faber would consider giving more thought but has Alexander Volkanovski placed pretty high regardless
In an interview with Dave Schmulenson aka The Schmo, Faber talks about recruiting Nate Diaz, his life post-retirement in general, the prospects he is helping in training and much more. But besides, Faber, a legend of the featherweight division in the WEC history, gives his take on how high is current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski ranked amongst the greatest featherweights of all times to do it.
“Pretty high,” was Faber’s answer “I’ve to give it some more thought… but pretty high, one of the greats for sure,” he concludes.
Volkanovski is 21-1 in his overall MMA career with a 21- fight winning streak and 11-0 in the UFC. In his overall MMA career, from middleweight to featherweight, Volkanovski has fought in all the weight classes and is undefeated in all of them, except for welterweight. Volkanovski’s last victory comes against Chan Sung Jung at UFC 273 via TKO in round 4.
What do you make of Faber’s thoughts on ranking Volkanovski amongst the all-time greats? Do you consider Volkanovski’s legacy strong enough to pitch against the greatest fighters of lighter weight classes? In his ongoing UFC tenure, Volkanovski has secured some incredibly significant wins over the likes of Max Holloway (twice), Brian Ortega, Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes, Darren Elkins, Jung and many more.
