“It’s not gonna help her,” Valentina Shevchenko claims Zhang Weili’s improvements will be rendered useless in a potential fight against her

Current UFC flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko is one of the most dangerous women alive. She sits at #2 on the UFC’s women’s P4P rankings, only lagging behind Amanda Nunes.

Recently, during the MMA awards, Valentina Shevchenko was asked about who her next opponent may be. She said the most likely opponents at this point may be either Alexa Grasso or Manon Fiorot. They both sit at #5 and #1 on the women’s flyweight rankings respectively.

When asked about what Shevchenko thought about Zhang Weili’s callout and how a potential fight between them may go, the Kyrgyz fighter gave a brutally honest assessment. She said, “It’s one of the options, what can happen, definitely. I saw her recent fights. She got stronger, more like, tactical. But if [our] fight is gonna happen, it’s not gonna help her.”

Valentina Shevchenko said she was open to fighting Weili in March next year when there will be not one but 2 UFC PPVs. UFC women’s strawweight champion, Zhang Weili mostly recently called out the flyweight champ Shevchenko on Ariel Helwani’s show. Weili said that a potential bout against the Kyrgyz fighter had the potential to be a “banger”. And certainly, the idea of this bout happening is a tantalizing prospect for MMA fans.

Recently, on Ariel Helwani’s show, UFC strawweight champion, Zhang Weili called out Flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko to a fight. The manner in which she did this was extremely respectful.

On The MMA Hour when asked if she was interested in fighting Shevchenko, she said, “No question. I thought about this a couple of years back. Eventually we will run into each other in the octagon because the weight divisions are so close.”

“I don’t know for sure if I’ll take the belt away from her, but one thing I can guarantee is it’s going to be a banger if me and the champ get in the octagon. It will be a great performance, regardless of the outcome.” continued Weili. And she is not wrong for this thinking this way.

Despite Valentina Shevchenko dismissing Weili and the improvements she has made, a fight between the two does look quite close on paper. Zhang Weili sits at #3 on the UFC’s P4P ranking. Whereas, her rival Shevchenko sits on the spot above her at #2. However, it is impossible to tell who carries the momentum going into this fight.

This is because Valentina is currently on a dominant run with an 8-fight win streak, whereas, Weili just won the strawweight belt off of Carla Esparza in a clinical display at UFC 281 and last lost to Rose Namajunas back in 2021.
