A tweet from a ‘verified’ but not real Taliban account praised Islam Makhachev ahead of UFC 294. Makhachev has been on the rise in the UFC’s lightweight division and has garnered attention from both fans and fellow fighters. It is not surprising for various entities to comment on him given his success and prominence in the sport of MMA.
Islam Makhachev is a rising star in the UFC’s lightweight division. He has consistently demonstrated his skills and dominance inside the Octagon. Ahead of UFC 294, many have acknowledged Makhachev’s prowess. Notably, an X account named Taliban Public Relations Department, Commentary which is a troll account that has even posted about Amitabh Bachchan and not the real Taliban commented “A great Muslim, and a great human,” on a post asking for opinions about Makhachev. One fan found it funny and took a dig at Charles Oliveira by commenting, “We have the taliban streets. Charles is so f*cked.”
Being from Dagestan and having trained alongside the former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, he was and still is compared to the retired Nurmagomedov. An interesting thing to note is that Makhachev was Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s favorite fighter. Abdulmanap is the father of Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev’s grappling-centric style is reminiscent of Khabib’s. This led many to see him as the heir apparent to the undefeated Russian’s lightweight throne.
Makhachev’s opponent at UFC 294 is Charles Oliveira. UFC 294 is a rematch of UFC 280, which saw Makhachev winning the UFC lightweight title. Thus fulfilling the plan that was set in motion by Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. In addition to being a coach and mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov is also best friends with Makhachev.

The interesting thing to note is that the X account is not of the real Taliban. The account praising Makhachev is actually a troll account that has even commented about Amitabh Bachchan. It is also worth noting that the praise from the account comes preluding his lightweight title defense against Charles Oliveira at UFC 294.
The fan reaction to the comment was mixed. Some find it funny, others find it very disappointing, while some others find it to be not true. Notably, one fan posted a picture of Makhachev with a gun. He used this as his unofficial confirmation of the alleged relationship between the champion and the Taliban. Another fan noted that the comment saying Islam is a good guy is not true. From the fan reactions, it is also evident that his previous opponents, Alexander Volkanovksi and Charles Oliveira, also have hardcore fans. Even though Makhachev easily defeated Oliveira at UFC 280, he had a tough fight with Volkanovski at UFC 284. Volkanovski is targeting a rematch with Makhachev at UFC 300.
