Who should headline UFC 300? Names like Conor McGregor to Nate Diaz have been floating along to headline the historic UFC 300 event. Israel Adesanya is another name circulating about the April fight cards. The former middleweight champion recently shared a poster from the iconic “300” film on his IG Story the other day. Fight fans are buzzing about the possibility; the expectant rival to be, is Dricus Du Plessis. Concurrently, there’s another factor fuelling this tease.
In a recent UFC live session, veteran welterweight Michael Chiesa sat down with Dan Hellie and Rashad Evans for ESPN MMA. Chiesa and ‘Stillknocks’ share the same management under manager Daniel Rubenstein. While digging into Adesanya’s Instagram story, hinting at a possible UFC 300 card main event, here’s what Chiesa uncovered-
For me, I would like to see him [Israel Adesanya] fight Dricus du Plessis. I have the same agent as Dricus Du Plessis, and I think that they’re trying to make [Du Plessis vs. Adesanya] happen. [Du Plessis] does have a compromised leg from the fight, maybe working on a new contract.Michael Chiesa via ESPN MMA
In conversation with Belal Muhammad, Eric Nicksick, and Jason Anik for the Anik & Florian Podcast#462, Rubenstein hinted at positive things. He said that Dricus Du Plessis and his former 185lbs rival would not engage head-on if “Izzy wasn’t ready“. The champion’s corner said that Du Plessis is in active talks with Israel Adesanya’s team.
Additionally, Chiesa’s take is likely more than speculation, in light of recent developments. Following his title win against Sean Strickland at UFC 297, Du Plessis had gunned for the rival, inciting a response from Adesanya. Only time will tell if one should be hopeful about such a discourse.
Israel Adesanya responded to Dricus Du Plessis’ aspirations after UFC 297
The rivalry between Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis is not a new one. After defeating Robert Whittaker at UFC 290, the South African phenom got face-to-face with Adesanya, in what is considerably one of the top face-offs in the promotion’s history.
In recent history though, Du Plessis edged over Sean Strickland with a split decision victory (47-48, 48-47, 48-47), and made a case for Israel Adesanya yet again. With Du Plessis perfectly setting up the stage for a ‘Real African’ fight, here’s what the rival posted online:
The UFC 300 pay-per-view (PPV) event will take place on the 13th of April at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, it does not have a championship main event as of yet. Du Plessis has already hinted at a quick turnaround for a maiden title defense given his body heals in time; so has Adesanya.
Subsequently, there’s no denying that Adesanya vs. Du Plessis holds the greatest of ‘wow factors’ for now. That is, should the matchup ever see fruition.
