The welterweight co-main at UFC Vegas 88 was between Bryan Battle and Ange Loosa. It ended in a dissatisfying fashion after an accidental eye poke by Battle. This eye poke rendered Loosa unable to continue. What followed was an ugly scene filled with heated exchanges.

The bout came to an anti-climactic halt in the second round. An inadvertent eye poke from Battle left Loosa visibly impaired. He couldn’t open his eye. After a brief evaluation, the cage-side doctor waved off the contest. The premature ending was initially frustrating but understandable for both fighters and fans. Tensions however quickly escalated between Battle and Loosa in the aftermath.

Pushing, shoving, and shouting profanities marred the conclusion of the fight. Battle was dismissive of Loosa’s inability to continue. He accused him of seizing an easy way out. Loosa adamantly refuted those claims. He insisted the eye poke was legitimate and debilitating.

The heated altercation continued for several minutes after the official No Contest result was read. It required intervention from officials and corners to restore order inside the Octagon. Michael Bisping was also present in the octagon. The UFC will likely be keen to rebook this grudge match soon. However, the promotion must ensure better sportsmanship prevailed in any rematch between the bitter rivals.

From the opening bell, Battle applied intense pressure and output against Loosa. His length, kicking game, and forward momentum were great. This had the Congolese fighter backpedaling. Battle mixed in strikes, grappling threats, and even scored a takedown. Loosa struggled to find consistent offensive chances against the onslaught. He looked to circle and counter when possible. However, Battle’s output remained dizzying. The first round was decisively in the American’s favor.

Round two picked up where the first left off. Battle was stalking Loosa. He denied a takedown attempt before the action ground to a halt. An inadvertent eye poke from Battle rendered Loosa unable to continue. The fight was declared a no contest due to the eye poke.
