Charles Oliveira remains a revered name in the combat sports culture, even away from active participation. ‘Do Bronx’ was supposedly to rehash it out with 25-1 lightweight king, Islam Makhachev at UFC 294’s headliner. However, a cut above his brow in training forced him out. Very recently, in a conversation with ESPN MMA‘s Brett Okamoto. Justin Gaethje weighed in on how his injury snubbed the hopes of a lot of lightweight contenders.

Gaethje had prompted being a different person ever since his submission loss to Oliveira at UFC 274. Similarly, Oliveira seems to have learned from his first loss to Makhachev, who bagged the gold with a 2nd-round submission (arm-triangle choke) on the Brazilian. Now, Oliveira’s viral IG Live sees him coaching a student on the same move. He urges the fighter to focus more on the transition than the submission itself.

Makhachev had cashed in on his first UFC lightweight title shot at UFC 280 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside Etihad Arena. Charles Oliveira went viral training and sparring welterweight standout Ian Garry at Chute Boxe Academy as well. This was during the UFC 298 Embedded: Vlog Series – Episode 1; a snap of which the Brazilian posted along with Diego Luna, taking to X.

A prime reaction noted – “Reminds me of when Khabib did this for Islam.” Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from MMA after UFC 254. Along with AKA coach Javier Mendez, he now corners close friend, Makhachev. Purchasing the ‘Gorilla Fighting Championship’, he also morphed it into ‘Eagle Fighting Championship’.

Oliveira began training in BJJ in his youth and was a multiple champion before making the transition to MMA in 2007. Currently competing in the lightweight division, he happens to be a former champ.
Oliveira holds several UFC records, including the organization’s most submission wins (16), finishes (20), and bonuses (19).

One reaction drew similarity to 155lbs legend Khabib Nurmagomedov training Islam Makhachev the same way. Instances of their friendship and behind-the-scene often go viral now and then. Another viral response brought to light that the move Oliveira is teaching is the same one he lost his title gold to at UFC 280.

A handful of others have noted the uncanny resemblance between him and his student, along with the latter wearing a yellow MMA short, like the Brazilian’s official Reebok fight shorts back in the day. All in all, the matter has accordingly garnered many wholesome responses.
