Raquel Pennington defeated Mayra Bueno Silva at UFC 297, to bag the vacant women’s bantamweight gold. Pennington defeated the opponent in way of a unanimous decision at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. But ringing true to peer Julianna Peña‘s statements of this being a horrible fight, the fanbase was angsty. As was veteran commentator Daniel Cormier, who spoke about it more recently.

Fight fans, furious over the dragging co-mains, had billed it as a snooze fest. Now, speaking with Ryan Clark (of NFL fame) on the ‘DC&RC’ Show podcast, Cormier couldn’t check in his laughter at the latter’s critical judgment. Recent footage shows Cormier rocking with laughter at his contemporary’s statements, describing the fight. Check out what Clark had to say on the same:

It looked like a fight between two people who got a game plan, and as they were walking to the octagon, they said – ‘F the game plan, Im’a do whatever the hell I want to do’…It looked like two people who knew good and dang well that it’s no way…they shouldn’t be fighting for championship…

Cormier had critiqued Pennington’s UFC 297 title win over Bueno Silva on his official YouTube channel, as an oddity. Bueno Silva started big but slowed considerably throughout. Allowing Pennington to take top control on the ground. Cormier felt opinionated about this not being a point of exploit for the champ. Additionally, he also wasn’t fond of Clark’s prediction to get rid of the division altogether.

While Pennington’s dominance over her Brazilian foe did not live up to the hype, Cormier isn’t going to let the 135lbs weight class go to waste. Alongside, he also attributes Bueno Silva’s ‘inexperience really showing for this dull affair. Concurrently, the MMA community has weighed in on it as well.

Bueno Silva has far fewer UFC fights than Pennington, and Cormier said it showed. Previously, he had commented on it at length. Alongside, he felt the new champion had underperformed as well. Accordingly, now fans have gibed that he must have really disliked the co-main event; hence the strings of laughter.

The discussion was instigated by bantamweight veteran Amanda Nunes‘ supposed return. Having vacated said title gold, the fighter recently hyped up the possibility of a return. Cormier also protested co-host Clark’s idea of scrapping the division. Despite the champion not getting a definite victory, he is hopeful for the future.
